Our Approach to the Curriculum for Wales

These purposes are not just aspirations—they are embedded in our daily practice, shaping how we teach, what we teach, and why we teach.

At our school, we embrace the transformative vision of the Curriculum for Wales, placing learners at the heart of everything we do. Our curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, foster independence, and prepare pupils for a changing world—guided by the Four Purposes that shape every learning experience.

The Four Purposes

We aim to develop children and young people who are:

    • Ambitious, capable learners ready to learn throughout their lives

    • Enterprising, creative contributors ready to play a full part in life and work

    • Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world

    • Healthy, confident individuals ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

What Matters Statements

Our curriculum is built around the “What Matters” statements, which define the key concepts and big ideas across all Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs). These statements ensure that learning is meaningful, coherent and connected—helping pupils make sense of the world and their place within it.

Authentic, Inquiry-Based Learning

We believe that learning should be authentic and rooted in real-world experiences. Our inquiry-based approach encourages pupils to ask questions, explore ideas, and take ownership of their learning. Whether investigating local history, solving environmental challenges, or designing creative projects, pupils engage in purposeful activities that spark imagination and deepen understanding.

A Progressive Curriculum

Our curriculum is thoughtfully sequenced to ensure progression in knowledge, skills, and understanding. We support learners to build on prior learning, stretch their thinking, and grow in confidence. This progressive model allows every child to thrive at their own pace while being challenged to reach their full potential.

Learning That Matters

From outdoor learning and community partnerships to digital innovation and creative expression, we offer rich experiences that connect learning to life. Our curriculum is dynamic, inclusive and responsive—designed to nurture well-rounded individuals who are ready to shape the future.

An Inquiry Approach To Learning at RYF

When designing our curriculum, we purposefully adopted an inquiry-based approach to ensure that learning is meaningful, authentic, and aligned with the Four Purposes of the Curriculum for Wales. This pedagogical choice reflects our intent to develop ambitious, capable learners who think critically, ask questions and engage deeply with their learning. Inquiry-led learning enables pupils to explore real-world contexts, make connections across Areas of Learning and Experience and take increasing responsibility for their progress. Through carefully planned and progressively structured experiences, we implement a curriculum that fosters independence, collaboration and reflective thinking. The impact is evident in our learners’ growing confidence, curiosity and ability to apply knowledge and skills in unfamiliar and challenging situations—demonstrating the depth and breadth of their learning journey.

 Standards

Inquiry-led learning supports high standards by encouraging pupils to think critically, communicate effectively and apply their knowledge in unfamiliar contexts. Through progressive, concept-driven experiences, learners deepen their understanding and demonstrate increasing independence and sophistication in their work. This approach enables us to track and support individual progress meaningfully across all Areas of Learning and Experience.

 Wellbeing and Attitudes to Learning

Inquiry fosters a strong sense of agency and engagement. Pupils are motivated by real-world challenges and meaningful questions which cultivates resilience, collaboration and a love of learning. By giving learners ownership of their journey, we promote wellbeing, confidence and a positive attitude towards lifelong learning.

Teaching and Learning Experiences

Our curriculum is designed to be dynamic and responsive with inquiry at its core. Teachers plan rich, authentic experiences that connect learning to pupils’ lives and communities. This approach allows for depth, creativity and progression, ensuring that teaching is both inclusive and ambitious. Learners are encouraged to explore, question and reflect—making learning a process of discovery rather than delivery
